Easy read, stories are relatable and universal, feels like the author is talking to you over a cup of coffee.
Typically I'm weary of books in the self help section and absolutely stay away from books in the diet section, but a friend kept suggesting I read this so I said why not. First this is not a "diet" book or even really a "self help" book, it's really a collection of stories and insights from Dr. Youdim on topics and challenges that effect all of us. While her patients all start with a question on weight or weight loss the lessons are very broad and universal without that preachy feeling of someone at some seminar telling you how to fix your life. Chapters are quick each circles around a patient story but is full of personal experiences and insights from Dr. Youdim's own stories and thoughts. She's super genuine and it makes reading feel less like reading a book and more like a conversation with a friend.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2021Reading this book is like listening to a close friend who knows you well share with you her journey to a higher self awareness. This book stops you in your track so you can ask yourself some very important questions about what are you really missing in your life and what is it in your life that you crave the most. It is a fun and easy read but at the same time very stimulating and thought provoking. It makes you dig deep inside your soul and your psyche and take a good scan of your emotions and explore what is it in life that you are REALLY hungry for. I now wake up every day asking myself what is it that I am hungry for today and how can I nourish my soul and my body to contentment. Having this awareness has truly been an incredible experience and a game changers or me. I highly recommend this book to everyone specially those who are on the journey of self awareness, self love and self acceptance.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2021I always felt so hard on myself about my weight... watching my mom and now me yo yo through life. I have done a lot of work on myself but the one thing that has eluded me as far as "figuring it out" is my weight. This book is written by a woman doctor who has all the most prestigious weight loss doctor credentials... yet it is a personal take on the stories of her clients and most poignantly of HERSELF that helped me bridge in my head the WHY I would overeat or make poor choices. It's like sitting down with a girlfriend and pouring your hearts out to each other.... cathartic and vulnerable and heart centering. We are all driven by different things which makes us so imperfectly human, yet I found myself looking into a mirror chapter after chapter. What was heartening is that the doctor herself talks about her own personal struggles and experiences and it not only helped me feel not so alone, but to have compassion for myself and through that compassion, I can make better choices for my health. I see now that I was sabotaging myself due to failed past attempts. This is one of many chapters that resonated true for me "Hungry for Possibility": "People are often discouraged by past attempts. The burden of having not been successful, of knowing we once lost weight only to regain it keeps us from giving ourselves a chance for a different result. Whatever the experience, positive or negative, rumination on the past will taint us, impede our ability to start anew, and dissuade us from the possibility for something more." She then talks about the Buddhist principle "Shoshin" or "Beginners Mind"- where you approach every act as if doing it for the first time. So many nuggets here... I will be buying copies for my friends and family. We are all WORTH IT!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2021This book is a beautiful compilation of human stories. Dr. Youdim‘s expertise shines through in these shared experiences of not only what has happened for her patients, but how her patients have impacted her, and how these experiences have affected her. There is a seamless flow between patient and physician experience in this collection of powerful and illustrative vignettes. The reader can see themselves in almost every story. Because the stories are so relatable, it has an impact on the reader and helps them feel supported. The struggles around weight in our society are pervasive, yet lonely, and this book gives strategies, encouragement, and hope. Thank you, Dr. Youdim, for having the patience with your patients, and for honoring them and yourself in these stories that will, no doubt, positively impact readers and help them identify what it really is that they’re hungry for, deep down.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2021This book is everything. So much of our struggles with food and weight loss have nothing to do with food and so much more to do with our emotions and what's missing in life. This book gets to the deeper layers of our habits and the deep meaning behind food, tradition, eating, and how all those are wrapped up in a complex web.
Dr. Youdim is candid and vulnerable with her own struggles which makes this book so relatable. So many times I couldn't help but say, "me too" as I was reading along.
Do yourself a favor and read this book and give it to all your friends. It will feed your soul.
