Global Engagement at Mozilla 🦊 | Ethical + Trustworthy AI

👋🏽 🇰🇪 Hello from Nairobi, Kenya where we just wrapped up MozFest House Kenya. We had many conversations on what trustworthy AI looks like from an African lens, with a focus on Eastern and Southern Africa. SO much to share but I'll focus on one of my highlights for now... 🎤 Our keynote speaker was Daniel Motaung, known for whistleblowing Meta's unethical practice of outsourcing traumatic content moderation work to the Global South, and especially to Kenya where Daniel was working with Sama, the company Meta contracted. Daniel applied for a job in content moderation, and based on the job ad he thought he’d be working with newspapers. After he was hired he learned he was working online, and for a social media company. Turns out he had signed up to screen graphic and traumatic images and videos for Meta via their contracting company, Sama. He was not given prior information about what this job would be, and did not have adequate supports after regularly watching gruesome content - some of the darkest things humans are capable of. He developed PTSD as a result and ended up suing Meta for work-related damages. Daniel spoke about his story and what he thinks needs to happen to hold tech companies to account. 💡Some ideas he shared: 1️⃣ Content moderators are globally distributed, and thus should organize in global workers’ unions. Right now there are 1-2 unions that exist but big tech companies are so big and powerful that there needs to be more global coordination of workers who are being exploited for profit. 2️⃣ Include content moderators from the Global South in high level meetings organized by big tech companies. Content moderation is the foundation of AI, and AI can also be used to pre-screen traumatic content and reduce the harms of content moderation on workers. 3️⃣ Pay better and have better workplace supports for content moderators. Daniel believes the outsourcing of this traumatic, low-paid labour by big tech companies is a sort of "re-colonization". 👉🏽 Daniel was paid about $2.20/hr, and said even after getting PTSD for life, looking back, he'd still say yes to the job because living in poverty was so scary -- "I would have chosen the money...poverty would have [still] driven me into the work". This is a sad reality for many workers who have almost no choice but to take any job available, and end up being exploited for their labour. This point in particular was most powerful for me. ✊🏽 Daniel's mission now is to spread word of his story so that these exploitative practices can change in the future -- "If you back me into a corner, best believe im going to fight back and get out of that corner... that is why I'm here" #mozfest #mozfesthousekenya #trustworthyai #ethicalai #contentmoderation #bigtech #platformaccountability Mozilla Festival Mozilla
